At Dunton Green Primary School, we provide a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that aims to foster a lifelong love of learning.

Our curriculum is designed to give children the knowledge, skills, experiences and confidence they need to succeed at Dunton Green and beyond. We want learning to be engaging, purposeful and memorable, while ensuring that children develop secure knowledge and understanding across the full range of subjects.

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for England, the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework and the appropriate curriculum requirements for Religious Education.

Our curriculum aims

Through our curriculum, we want every child to:

• develop mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills;
• become curious about the world around them;
• think critically, ask questions and solve problems;

• develop positive relationships and understand how to keep themselves safe and healthy;
• experience sport, music, the arts and learning beyond the classroom; and
• develop the confidence, independence and resilience they need for the next stage of their education.

How our curriculum is organised

Learning is carefully planned and sequenced so that children's knowledge and skills develop progressively as they move through the school.

Our year-group curriculum overviews, available below, show the content children will encounter during each term and across each subject.

Teachers make meaningful connections between subjects where these help children to deepen their understanding, while ensuring that children develop the distinctive knowledge and skills associated with individual subjects.

A range of high-quality resources and curriculum programmes support our teaching. These include Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised for phonics and early reading, White Rose to support Mathematics, Kapow Primary for Music and SCARF for PSHE.

Reading and phonics

Reading is fundamental to children's success and has a high priority throughout our curriculum.

In Reception and Key Stage 1, we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised as our systematic synthetic phonics programme to teach children to read.

As children progress through school, they encounter a wide range of high-quality texts and develop their fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and enjoyment of reading.

An inclusive curriculum

Our curriculum is for every child.

Teachers use adaptive teaching, appropriate resources and reasonable adjustments to ensure that pupils, including those with SEND, can access ambitious learning and participate successfully in the full curriculum.

Learning beyond the classroom

We believe that some of children's most memorable learning happens beyond individual lessons.

Our curriculum is enriched through educational visits, visitors to school, sporting opportunities, performances, music, clubs and other experiences.

Children have opportunities to participate in a range of sports and physical activities, including swimming, and we encourage every child to discover forms of physical activity that they enjoy.

Children also have opportunities to learn musical instruments, including through specialist and peripatetic tuition.

By the time children leave Dunton Green, we want them to have developed not only academically, but also as confident, respectful and responsible young people with positive memories of their primary education.

Religious Education

Religious Education enables children to develop their knowledge and understanding of religions and worldviews and to consider important questions about belief, meaning and how people live.

Parents and carers have a statutory right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education. We encourage any parent considering withdrawal to speak to the Head of School so that the curriculum and the implications of withdrawal can be discussed.
