Phonics and Early Reading


Phonics teaching occurs daily through Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, and follows the "Letters and Sounds" strategy with further support from "Phonics Play", which aims to make the teaching of phonics, fun and enjoyable for the children and enables them to see the purpose in their learning..  Children are assessed by class teachers and placed into groups across the three classes based on the phase that they are working at.  Miss Wood leads on phonics across the school.

For those children who do not achieve the expected level at the end of KS1 phonics interventions are put in place throughout KS2 until they meet such as level.  This may include joining the daily teaching in another year group.

 Phonics naturally progresses into reading which is taught in a variety of ways:

1) Through environmental print - we take great pride in our school environment here at Dunton Green and the children are exposed to a wide range of words both inside and outside of the classroom.

2) Through exposure to high quality texts - it is crucial at this young age that we expose the children to wonderful books which we do through well resourced book areas, but importantly through adults sharing the joy of reading with our children through reading to them on a daily basis.

3) Through individual readers - very quickly children will bring home a reading book which has been chosen as being at the appropriate level for them to read.  It is important not only to decode the words but to share the story, ask and answer questions about it and enjoy it!

4)  Through shared reading - this is where children in a group take turns to read a story out loud and then have opportunities to talk about it afterwards or even to act it out

5) Through guided reading - where a group of children read the same text with a purpose in mind.  This might be to answer questions at the end posed by the teacher or by others in their group.  It may be a book club style discussion or it may be to look at a specific aspect of the book such as characterisation or setting.

Reading at a young age is the absolute key to opening a world of learning to the children and we believe is the key to making lifelong learners.
