Phonics and Early Reading

At Dunton Green we inspire our children through a meaningful reading and writing curriculum that includes specific Phonics teaching. Our engaging Phonics curriculum equips children with the skills and motivation to read and write quickly and skilfully.

In addition to a stimulating, rich and varied English curriculum, children at Dunton Green receive excellent teaching of systematic synthetic phonics. Phonics is a teaching approach that equips children with the skills they need to read and write quickly and skilfully and provides a solid foundation for reading fluently and writing effectively. At Dunton Green, we have created a bespoke Phonics scheme based on a government resource called Letters and Sounds. Children at Dunton Green receive daily high-quality Phonics teaching at the correct level for their individual needs. Phonics is taught explicitly in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 and is further consolidated through individual or small group programmes and whole class Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar lessons as children move into Key Stage 2. Phonics lessons are engaging and interactive and children are also given opportunities to embed their phonics skills through follow-up activities and during their English and Reading lessons. Each child is provided with a phonics pack and parents receive training in order to support their child’s phonics learning at home. Children at Dunton Green develop excellent early reading and writing skills and we achieve above average results in the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check.
