Admissions

Dunton Green Primary School welcomes pupils from all backgrounds and ability ranges, and strives to ensure that every child, regardless of race, religion, culture, gender or physical ability, is given equal access to our curriculum and school activities. Our mission is to develop happy secure children.  We will nurture every individual to fulfil their potential so that they can make a positive contribution to both the school and wider society.

If you would like to enquire about places available at the school or arrange a visit to view the school please contact the school office on 01732 462221.

How do I apply for a school place?

The school accepts pupils from the beginning of the educational year in which they will be five, until the end of the educational year in which they are 11 years old.

Reception Class

We have one intake each year for Reception Class in September.

In October and November, the school provides several opportunities to come and visit the school in action. There will be a talk by the Headteacher and the Reception teacher. There will also be an opportunity to visit the Early Years setting and see the rest of the school. Finally, there will be an opportunity to ask questions about our transition into EYFS.

If you would like a school place for your child in September, you should contact the school office in September of the previous school year. By then, the school should have received information from KCC Admissions Department in Maidstone regarding admission procedures for the following year's intake. Parents are encouraged to apply online at www.kent.gov.uk/ola  between November and January or if they do not have access to the online site, an alternative format can be requested by e-mailing kentonlineadmissions@kent.gov.uk

You should complete the application by naming three schools, putting them in order of preference. Naming just one school does not guarantee a place at that school. There is no requirement to name three preferences, but it is in your best interests to do so.

Following the closing date, KCC will allocate places for all pupils according to their preferences and subject to the oversubscription criteria (see below). Please note that all decisions are taken by KCC, not by the school.

When will I know if my child has a place?

Notification of the outcome of an application is given in line with the timing set by the LEA. Please visit the website above for up-to-date information and dates.

Unsuccessful applicants have a right of appeal if their child does not get a place at any of their preferred schools. The LEA website gives details of how to appeal. Unsuccessful applicants can also have their child’s name put on a waiting list and a place will be offered should a vacancy arise.

How is the number of places decided?

The number of places available is determined by the physical capacity of the school.
Since September 2001 the law has said that we should not educate an infant pupil in a class which has more than 30 pupils per qualified teacher. An infant class is one where most of the pupils will reach the age of five, six or seven during the school year.

If the school is oversubscribed, what criteria are used to decide which children should be offered places?

If the school is oversubscribed, places will be allocated on the basis of the following criteria in this order:

  •  Looked after children

  •  Siblings already at the school at the time of entry

  •  Health reasons

  •  Nearness of child’s home and ease of access to the school.

    Pre-School Preparation

In the Summer Term before your child starts, they will be invited to visit the school for four afternoon sessions to meet their teacher, meet their new classmates and learn about the school. At first, parents may remain on site but on the last visit the children remain unaccompanied. These visits are invaluable, helping to ensure a smooth entry into school life. We also hold an evening meeting for new parents.

    Available places in other classes

Please contact the school office on 01732 462221 to check whether there are any places available in the class required. Places are offered by the school and so applications must be made through them. Parents should complete an In Year Application Form (IYAF). Application Forms are available from the school or can be downloaded from the website www.kent.gov.uk Please visit the ‘In Year admission’ page or click hereWe warmly welcome visits to the school, please contact the school to make an appointment.
